What do you do in your current role/area of expertise?

I lead and manage the radiography and physiotherapy teams and provision. In this role I need to maintain currency with practice. I teach students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations, and PhD students.

I am an active researcher and my research is mainly centred around people; person-centred care, service user involvement, professional cultures and interprofessional working.

What steps did you take to get to this role?

Education – MSc, DProf

Training – making the most of opportunities

Development – research, applying for funding, working with the College of Radiographers (CoR), developing networks and collaborations wherever possible, finding my niche and area of interest.

What support did you have along the way or would have been helpful to have had?

I had some mentorship from non-radiographers, and I think I would have benefitted from a mentor from my own profession, so I am now trying to do that for others through the College of Radiographers Formal Radiography Research Mentoring Scheme FoRRM and informally.

What is the most rewarding thing about your role?

Seeing others grow and develop, both in my team but also students. It is great to see them achieve and thrive.  I hope that I can facilitate this and provide opportunities for others now.

What advice can you give to others who might want to work towards this role or follow a similar pathway?

Find a good mentor to guide you. Make the most of opportunities. Be tenacious and ask if you can be involved if there is a project you are interested in. Read and make sure you are up to date with professional practice and developments in the profession. Attend conferences and learn from others wherever possible. Network and make contacts with people as you can learn a lot from others and in sharing practice.
